Charleston’s Health Initiative: Growing Accessible, Healthy Food—One Fruit Tree at a Time

Get Involved Today

Whether you want a tree, want to volunteer, or want to donate — we’d love to connect with you.

What if every yard in Charleston offered a source of nourishing food — where figs, pomegranates, or mulberries grow as freely as the grass beneath them. Food For Every Yard is making that vision real, by planting one fruit tree at a time.  For every tree purchased, another tree is planted at no cost to those in need.

FAQs

How much space do I need?

Each tree will need a 4-6 ft diameter dedicated space.

How do I choose which fruit tree is best for my yard?

The three options are chosen for their ease of care and adaptability to the area. The Dwarf Mulberry is the smallest option growing up to 8ft with pruning. The Pomegranate will grow 8-10 ft with pruning. The Fig will grow 8-10 ft with pruning.

Do I need a lot of sunlight?

The ideal location should receive 6 hours of sunlight for best production. If you are unsure or only have a shaded area, contact us for another recommendation.

What are “native support plants,” and why are they included?

Native support plants are companion species that help enhance soil health, attract beneficial insects, and increase the overall resilience of your fruit tree. By planting these four native plants around your fruit tree, you’re creating a small ecosystem

Is installation included in the purchase price?

Yes. Our offering includes the fruit tree, four native support plants, soil amendments, mulch, and full installation at your home or designated space.

Do I need to prepare my yard in any way before installation?

We will ask that any utility lines, such as electrical, gas, and water lines are marked before planting.

How do I care for the tree after it’s planted?

After installation, the most important part of care is regular watering. The tree should be watered once a week for the first 6 months. We can install a drip irrigation system for an additional cost, to provide ease of mind.  Pruning will become necessary if a smaller space needs to be utilized.

Is there a warranty?

We offer a limited guarantee for the first 3 months, provided you follow the recommended care instructions. If you notice any issues, contact us right away so we can assess, advise, or replace the tree if necessary.

What about the deer?

If your yard has heavy deer activity it is recommended that a temporary fence is placed around the tree until it grows out of their reach. We can provide installation of a temporary fence for an additional cost.

How soon can I expect to harvest fruit?

Many fruit trees take 1–3 years before they produce a significant harvest, depending on the variety and growing conditions. We’ll provide tips on how to care for your tree to encourage healthy growth and earlier fruiting. You may be able to harvest within first year!

Why is the focus on fruit trees?

Fruit trees provide a low maintenance, long-term source of nutritious food. They also help reduce carbon footprints, support pollinators, and beautify neighborhoods. Our goal is to make healthy, homegrown produce a reality for all Charleston residents.

Does the initiative cover ongoing maintenance or pruning?

Initial installation and setup are included as part of the purchase.  We can provide ongoing maintenance for an additional fee.  The purchase of a maintenance agreement will extend the warranty of the tree to 6 months.  We provide pruning and maintenance instructions for all installations.
