Small Scale Agroforestry System in Charleston, South Carolina
Constructing Resilience: A Backyard Food Forest with a Small Scale Agroforestry System in Charleston, South Carolina
Description:
Envisioned by Eléonore Todini and installed by the experts at Permanent Yield, the project’s primary objectives were to establish a thriving food production system and enhance native biodiversity.
The initial phase focused on transforming the rear of the property into a food forest. Fruit tree guilds, berry patches, and vegetable beds were established, complemented by a kiwi trellis. Native plants were thoughtfully incorporated, creating a harmonious blend of edible and ornamental species.
The septic field was reimagined as a native wildflower prairie, utilizing shallow-rooted flowers and grasses. This innovative approach repurposed an otherwise challenging area, transforming it into an ecologically valuable space.
Additional features that contribute to the property’s self-sufficiency and sustainability include a rainwater catchment system, grazing paddocks for livestock, and a vermicompost system that harnesses the power of nature’s recyclers.
The second phase will concentrate on constructing a small-scale agroforestry system with animal integration.
