Residential Food Forest in the Lowcountry of South Carolina

Cultivating an Edible Oasis: Designing and Implementing a Thriving Residential Food Forest in the Lowcountry of South Carolina

Description:
The primary goals of this project were to reduce the amount of lawn area and increase on-site food production. By incorporating native medicinal and food-producing species such as Aronia, Chickasaw plum, and Beautyberry, a balanced ecosystem was created to support both human needs and native wildlife. Sprawling vegetable patches were placed to utilize the available ground space. The kiwi pergola serves as a grand entryway into the main food forest. To preserve the wood used for the vegetable beds and compost system, a traditional Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban was employed. This non-toxic method helps extend the lifespan of untreated wood.

The second phase of installation will include integrating Biogeometry design techniques to energetically harmonize the space, as well as construction of a meditation space and natural pool.
